Since I started working in a grocery store, I have observed many behaviors, and have formed many new opinions about people. Many customers are just as friendly as I am to them, however, there are those who have so much negative energy surrounding them, that you feel like the size of a cricket laying on the floor, smashed. I know, that as an employee, we are supposed to make our customer feel welcome, but I would do this even if I weren't standing behind a check out stand. I may sound very bitter in what I'm about to say, but there are a few things that I have made note of while working that I believe customers should think about before coming to a store.
First of all, when the cashier/employee asks you if "you found everything alright," or how your day is going, please do NOT ignore them. It is not difficult to say yes or no or answer how you are. Furthermore, when we say "thank you," it would be nice to get a "thank you" or at least some form of acknowledgement in return.
When the cashier is checking your items out, put your cell phone in your purse/pocket and at least pretend that you are capable of looking someone in the eye. Its only for a few minutes.
If you are going to go shopping, don't bring in a bad attitude. Try not to act like you are too almighty and powerful to go shopping. Basically, if you woke up on the wrong side of the bed, or if you are crying because something unforseen has happened in your life, do NOT take it out on the employees. We are people too, we understand bad days. Chances are, we're having one too.
Don't expect every employee to know EVERYTHING about everything in the store. If I don't know how to answer a question, chances are there is someone else in the store who can. Just be patient and wait for an answer instead of saying, "oh forget about it," and then storming out of the store like we have crushed your dreams.
Lastly, you don't need to "teach me a lesson" on how to bag your groceries. Unless you plan on thowing your bags at a brick wall, I think the bread is going to be safe on top of the eggs.
